10 Steps to Set Up in Portugal
Below you will find a detailed step-by-step that will help you set up in Portugal

If you have foreign citizenship and want to live and work in Portugal you will need to register in the Finance Department ("Finanças").
Registration in the Finance Department gives you a Tax Identification Number (NIF), which allows you to work, open a bank account or comply with tax obligations in Portugal.
To request the NIF, you need the following documents:
- Resident in Portugal - civil identification document from the country of origin or passport* and the residence permit
- Non-resident in Portugal - identification document or passport* and have a fiscal representative (individual or collective) with residence in national territory
* If you present the passport, you must also present the visa for entry into Portugal or the Schengen Area.
How to request the NIF?
- At the Tax Office (Finanças) - make an appointment for personal attendance through the Call Centre (CAT) - 217 206 707, working days, from 9 am to 7 pm (PT time zone)
Disclaimer: If you have a direct contract with another company, they might have a specific procedure for requesting your NIF - You should check with them first!
Additional information - Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) Status:
- In case you have the NHR status and have a direct contract with CTW please send us the proof document so that we can consider this information on our payroll.

You should always have with you the following documentation:
- Passport/ID Card
- NIF number
- Residency permit / CRUE (EU Citizenship Registration Certificate)*
- European Health Insurance Card (applicable to European Citizens)
- PB4 (applicable to Brazilian Citizens)
*Do you not have your CRUE? Find out more below:
- European Union Citizenship Registration Certificate is required in various situations and guarantees foreigners from countries of the European Union, the European Economic Area, and Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, who wish to reside in Portugal, their permanence is assured.
The CRUE must be requested at the City Council of the city where the foreigner has taken up residence. More information here.

The NISS (“Número de Identificação de Segurança Social” – Social Security Number) is a necessary number that identifies you on the Portuguese Social Security System.
Having this number allows you to access rights such as support and subsidies, and to fulfill obligations related to contributions.
If you have a direct contract with CTW, the Hearts Team will provide you with the necessary documentation on the company's part in order for you to request your NISS.
How can you request your NISS?
- Access this form where you can request your NISS online
- You will have to attach your Identification Document (EU Citizens: Civil ID from the country of origin and your CRUE; Third country: Passport, Residence Permit, Residence Authorization, or other ID from the country of origin, as well as your Visa) and your Work Contract (provided by CTW)
-After the request you will receive a confirmation email as well as the instructions to pick up your NISS in person at one of the Social Security services
In case you don't have a direct contract with CTW, you should check with your company the right procedure.

*If you have a direct contract with CTW, we can provide you a statement to open the bank account if needed.

Lisbon - Public transportation is available through Metro Lisboa (subway), CP (trains), Carris (bus). You have different ticket or pass options:
- “Viva Viagem”: this option applies to occasional rides
- “Passe Navegante”: this option is a monthly pass applicable not only to the subway, but also to bus, train and tram - Check here how to request it
Porto - public transportation is available through Andante
- Occasional rides: check prices here
- “Passe Andante”: this option is a monthly pass applicable not only to subway, but also bus and train - Check here how to request it
*Pro Tip - Only applicable to CTW workers with at-will or fixed-term contracts: If you buy a monthly pass for public transportation you can use the FlexMobility Benefit to request a reimbursement.

After you receive your NISS get in touch with your local health center to request your “Número de Utente do Serviço Nacional de Saúde” (National Health System User Number or SNS's User Number). This number gives access to the public health services. More information here.
At the health center, you must present the following documents:
- A valid residence permit issued by the Immigration and Borders Service
- Tax Identification Number (tax card)
Also CTW provides you a Private Health Insurance – Multicare (Only applicable to CTW workers with at-will or fixed-term contracts).
- Regardless of having private health insurance, you will still need your national health system user number.
- Pro tip: Install on your phone both SNS 24 App – public service & Multicare App – private health insurance.

Lisbon:
- Public - Hospital de Santa Maria; Hospital Santa Marta; Hospital de São Francisco Xavier.
- Private - Hospital da Luz Lisboa; CUF Descobertas Hospital; CUF Almada Clinica.
Porto:
- Public - Centro Hospitalar Universitário São João; Hospital de Santo António.
- Private - Hospital Lusíadas Porto; CUF Porto Hospital.

- Contact SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) (Public Service) – they will guide you and let you the steps you should take;
- Book an appointment on a private hospital (make sure the hospital is covered by our health insurance - if applicable) – You can check on this page all the hospitals/clinics covered by our Health Insurance (Multicare) or use the FREE Online Medicine Service provided by Multicare (all information here)

- The main providers of phone/tv/internet in Portugal are: Vodafone* (CTW has special conditions with this provider), Meo, NOS.
